Find out more about moo boxes

The Moo box is a box, when you turn it upside down, creates the mooing of a cow. The moo box is a toy or a souvenir.

Some boxes create other animal sounds like the mewing of a cat, the sound of a bird or the bleat of a sheep.

The most common use of the moo boxes, excepted the amusement of the people, is the Moatti test, conceived by the doctor Lucien Moatti. It uses four boxes (cow, bird, cat, sheep), calibrated to reach sixty decibels at two metres, and is of use to the hearing screening for the children from six to twenty four months.

By knocking down the box, outside the sight of the child, it is possible to know if he hears the sound when he turns the head in the direction of the sound. So, every box tests different frequencies :

  • the cow tests the basses;
  • the sheep tests averagely basses;
  • the cat tests the averagely trebles;
  • the bird tests the trebles.
