The cricket (clicker, sometimes also known as the D-Day cricket) was an instrument used as a reconnaissance system by paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division who were sent to Carentan on the night of 5-6 June 1944 during Operation Albany.
It was designed to help the paratroopers identify their own units without the risk of being unmasked by the enemy: to a sound signal - "click-clack" - the paratroopers had to respond with two "click-clacks", simply by pressing on the flexible blade of the brass instrument.
